GOV successfully facilitates the rescue and repatriation of human trafficking victim

September 8th, 2023

In a commendable display of humanitarian efforts, Global Odia Volunteers (GOV) has successfully assisted in repatriating Dinabandhu Sahu, a victim of human trafficking who was stranded in Cambodia.

The harrowing ordeal began when Mr. Sahu was initially sent to Vietnam by an employment agency based in Gujarat under the premise of gaining employment in Vietnam. However, his circumstances turned dark when he was forcibly redirected to Cambodia by one of the agents, effectively making him a victim of human trafficking. He was trapped in an unidentified Cambodian company in Cambodia, where his passport was seized. The company demanded a hefty sum of $2500 for his release, leaving Mr. Sahu in dire conditions. He was confined to a cramped room without a proper salary and adequate food.

Upon learning of this distressing situation, GOV Volunteers Om Mahapatra and GOV Co-founder Sanjay Dalai swiftly sprang into action. They contacted Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Gopalpur MLA Pradeep Panigrahi for assistance. Even amidst the ongoing G20 global summit, Union Minister Pradhan promptly wrote a letter to India's External Affairs Minister, Dr. S Jaishankar, advocating for Mr. Sahu's immediate repatriation, while MLA Panigrahi sought prompt action from the Ministry of External Affairs on this matter.

GOV proactively monitored the situation, maintained constant contact with Mr. Sahu, organized food provisions and secured flight tickets for his return to India. As a result of these relentless efforts, Mr. Sahu is now en route to India, where he will soon be reunited with his family in Odisha.

This heartwarming success story underscores the vital role that organizations like Global Odia Volunteers play in alleviating the suffering of individuals with low socio-economic backgrounds who fall victim to human trafficking and find themselves in distressing circumstances abroad. This also serves as a testament to the power of community and government collaboration in making a real difference in the lives of those in need.
